NSP's Vitamin A & D — Naturally-sourced vital nutrients for skin, eyes, hormonal balance, immune health and overall wellness.
It is estimated that less than 20% of the American population consumes adequate fresh fruits and vegetables to acquire the RDA for vitamin A.
Commonly known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D was discovered to be deficient in nearly half of those tested at the close of winter in research conducted by the University of Maine. In fact, Nutrition Research reported that nearly 42% of U.S. adults don’t get enough vitamin D.
Additional research suggests that vitamin D levels in the elderly tend to be about half that of younger people.
The elderly are more susceptible to vitamin D deficiencies as a result of insufficient vitamin D in their diets, from taking medications that disrupt vitamin D metabolism, or simply not getting enough sunlight.
Others at a risk of vitamin D deficiency are alcoholics, those with malabsorption problems, and people who live in areas with little sunlight.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is essential for maintaining good eyesight, promoting normal growth, and supporting healthy immune system defenses.
It is also necessary for lactation, reproduction, and the formation of steroid hormones.
Vitamin A is an important component of cell growth and multiplication and is needed for skin and scalp health.
Vitamin A is also used to form the epithelial cells lining the digestive, respiratory, reproductive and urinary tracts and in all tissue linings of the body.
Plus, vitamin A is required for the digestion of protein. Vitamin A is best absorbed when taken with oil or fat.
The two major forms of vitamin A are retinol, which is provided in foods of animal origin such as liver, milk, cheese, butter and egg yolks; and beta-carotene, found in plants, which is converted into vitamin A by the body as needed.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays an important role in absorbing and regulating calcium and phosphorus.
Since vitamin D assists the body in absorbing calcium, sufficient levels are needed for healthy bones.
Vitamin D is also vital to the health of the immune and nervous systems and the kidneys.
Plus, vitamin D helps the body synthesize protein. Vitamin D works synergistically with vitamin A.
Vitamin D is the only vitamin whose "active form" is a hormone manufactured in the skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Vitamin D can be found in trace amounts in certain foods, primarily egg yolks, fatty fish, liver, and milk fat. However, vitamin D is more commonly acquired through supplementation.
